Mike Kreza Struck by Suspected DUI Driver on Alicia Parkway
MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2018) – A bicyclist died in a collision with a suspected DUI driver Saturday morning on Alicia Parkway, according to KTLA 5 News.
The collision took place about 8 a.m., killing Costa Mesa fire captain Mike Kreza as he rode his bicycle and was struck by a van on eastbound Alicia Parkway near Via Burgos.
The 18-year veteran of the Costa Mesa fire department suffered major injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. He later died of his injuries at the hospital early Monday morning.
A GoFundMe page was set up for Kreza’s family and had raised more than $75,000 by Monday. Kreza is survived by his wife and three young girls.
DUI Driver Stephen Scarpa Arrested After Mission Viejo Crash
The driver in the van was identified as 25-year-old Stephen Taylor Scarpa. Investigators said the motorist was evaluated at the scene for possible DUI, and was subsequently arrested. The suspect appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Police found multiple prescription medications inside his vehicle, KTLA said. Scarpa is being held in lieu of $100 bail.
