Mistie Upchurch, 23, Seriously Injured in Imperial County Crash on Highway 98
IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA (May 3, 2021) – A fatal head-on crash on Highway 98 seriously injured Mistie Upchurch in Imperial County.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 23-year-old Campo woman as one of the victims in the wreck which occurred on Monday.
The incident happened when Mistie Upchurch was riding as a passenger in a 2002 Pontiac going west on Highway 98 in Imperial County. At the same time, a 2005 Lincoln was traveling east.
CHP said the driver of the Lincoln, 41-year-old Campo resident Detron Williams, veered into the westbound lane for an unknown reason.
Man, 83, Killed in Head-On Collision Near Holdridge
In the process, the two cars collided head-on east of Holdridge Road. The Desert Review and Imperial Valley Press reported that the Lincoln rolled over upon impact.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced the 83-year-old Calexico man driving the Pontiac dead at the scene. The accident took place at about 11:54 a.m.
Mistie Upchurch suffered major injuries to her legs as a result of the Imperial County crash. An air ambulance then took her to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment.
Meanwhile, CHP added that Williams sustained minor injuries following the collision. Authorities soon forced the highway to shut down for a time after the wreck.
The cause of the fatal Highway 98 crash is still under investigation.
