Mitchell Morales, 59, Killed in Long Beach DUI Crash at Stearns and Radnor

LONG BEACH, CA (July 2, 2021) – A DUI crash killed a man in a wheelchair, Mitchell Morales, in Long Beach last month.

Long Beach Post News identified the 59-year-old man as the victim of the fatal collision which took place on June 12.

The incident happened in Long Beach when Mitchell Morales was crossing southbound on Radnor Avenue in his wheelchair. At the same time, a 2016 Honda Civic was going west on Stearns Street.

Police said the driver, 26-year-old Joseph Maez, then struck the victim. He was pushing a shopping cart full of his belongings in the unmarked crosswalk when he was hit.

The man in the wheelchair, Mitchell Morales, died at the scene. The Press Telegram and KTLA News wrote that the accident occurred at about 11:19 p.m.

Meanwhile, police determined that Joseph Maez was under the influence of alcohol when he slammed into the victim. Authorities soon arrested him and set his bail at $100,000.

The Long Beach man entered his not guilty plea to one felony count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury and driving with a 0.08% blood-alcohol content causing injury.

The Long Beach DUI crash is still under investigation.
