At around 9:00 a.m., the driver of a Mercedes Benz, Lupe Cardenas, 67, had initially been in a collision where he rear-ended a woman in which he fled the scene before smashing into the driver of a Lexus.
Nieves Alejandro Romero, 29, of Merced, was allegedly unconscious with noticeable serious injuries. He was rushed to the ER, where he sadly died of his injuries a short while later.
Lupe Cardenas appeared to have been under the influence as he was hostile towards witnesses who attempted to assist him following the second crash. Cardenas had been driving at excess speeds prior to the incident.
Police officials arrested Cardenas and enforced a toxicology test at the scene on the 67-year-old man in which the results are still pending.
More information will be released pending the investigation being conducted by the Modesto Police Department.
