MODESTO (August 23, 2017)- According to the Modesto Bee, an off-duty Modesto police officer was struck and killed Tuesday evening by a drunk driver as he rode his bike along Merle Avenue.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene of the collision just west of Fine Avenue where a drunk driver had struck a 5-year Modesto police officer identified as Mike Pershall at roughly 6:00 p.m.

Matthew Gibbs Arrested for DUI Crash

Pershall had apparently been riding his bicycle westbound on Merle before being hit from behind a Volkswagen driven by Matthew Gibbs, 32, who then jumped the curb also hitting a fire hydrant.

Pershall who had also worked with the Tuolumne County Sherriff’s Department was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, police officials arrested Gibbs and have since taken him into custody at Stanislaus County Jail. He will face charges including driving under the influence as well as vehicular manslaughter.

Per the Modesto Bee, Gibbs also had a driving and driving incident in 2015 which was later dismissed, according to court records.

According to Tuolumne sheriff officials Sgt. Andrea Benson, “Everyone here is just heartbroken and trying to process what has happened.” Pershall worked a myriad of positions including K-9 handler, field training officer, and certified hostage negotiator, the article added.

No further details have been released at this time.
