Mostafa Hasanein and Steven Oatman Injured in Costa Mesa Wrong-Way Crash
COSTA MESA (October 17, 2019) – Officers identified the two drivers injured after an alleged DUI crash along the 55 Freeway early Sunday.
Mostafa Hasanein, 23; and Steven Oatman, 55, became involved in a chain of collisions on October 13 just north of Victoria Street. Hasanein is from Orange while Oatman is a resident of Costa Mesa.
California Highway Patrol said the incident began at about 3:36 a.m. when a Toyota Camry was traveling north in the southbound lanes of the 55 Freeway.
The Camry struck a GMC Sierra driven by Oatman. The GMC went up on a nearby embankment while the Toyota ended up in the leftmost freeway lane.
Multi-Car Accident on 55 Freeway Near Victoria Street
According to an article published by the Los Angeles Times, Hasanein driving a Ford Expedition south then collided with the Camry.
Paramedics responded to the scene and took Hasanein to Hoag Hospital and Oatman to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment. Both sustained minor injuries upon impact.
The two occupants of the Camry were also hospitalized with minor wounds. CHP determined that the man operating the wrong-way car was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time.
Officials ultimately arrested the suspect on suspicion of DUI. The investigation is ongoing.
