Motorcycle Accident 55 Freeway, I-5 Freeway Transition in Tustin

Motorcyclist Injured in Crash on SR-55 Transition to I-5 in Orange County
ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (May 7, 2025) — A motorcycle rider was seriously injured Wednesday morning in a Tustin accident on the northbound SR-55 connector to northbound I-5, prompting a temporary closure of the HOV transition ramp.
The incident occurred around 8:40 a.m. on May 7th, when a gray Toyota 4Runner reportedly collided with a motorcycle in the HOV transition lane.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the rider rear-ended the SUV and was ejected from the motorcycle, possibly falling off the elevated overpass connector ramp.
“The rider flew over the transition lane and down onto city streets under the 5 Freeway,” the report said.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes. The rider was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been publicly released.
The crash led to a full closure of the HOV transition from SR-55 to I-5 northbound, as crews worked to secure the scene and remove the motorcycle. A SigAlert was issued, and traffic was backed up for several miles through the morning.
By 9:55 a.m., CHP officers confirmed the transition ramp had reopened after a tow crew cleared the wreckage.
The incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not confirmed whether speed or other factors contributed to the crash.
Motorcycle accidents are a recurring concern on Southern California’s busy transition roads, particularly where elevated ramps and high-speed merges increase the risk of serious injuries.
CHP urges all motorists to use extra caution on connector ramps and to maintain safe following distances.
