Motorcyclist Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-805 Freeway in San Diego
High-Speed Tesla Involved in Collision Near Telegraph Canyon Road
SAN DIEGO — July 1, 2025 — A motorcyclist was killed Monday night in a violent four-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 805 Freeway near Telegraph Canyon Road in San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The fatal collision occurred around 8:03 p.m. on June 30 and involved a red Tesla sedan, a motorcycle, and at least two other vehicles. CHP dispatch reports indicate that the Tesla was allegedly traveling at high speeds and driving recklessly prior to striking the motorcyclist. The impact left the rider down in the freeway lanes.
All four southbound lanes were initially blocked by disabled vehicles, with only the slow lane remaining open for traffic. A SigAlert was issued and remained in effect overnight, as first responders and Caltrans crews worked to investigate and clear the scene.
According to witness reports relayed in the dispatch log, a man believed to be the Tesla driver was seen walking barefoot on the freeway shortly after the crash. He was described as a white male adult wearing a gray shirt and blue shorts. Authorities believe he may have attempted to flee the scene on foot. He was later detained by CHP officers and returned to the site of the crash.
Traffic was severely impacted for hours, with the No. 1, 2, and 3 lanes remaining closed into early Tuesday morning. Caltrans crews coordinated multiple traffic breaks and road closures as part of the investigation and cleanup effort.
The name of the deceased motorcyclist has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not confirmed whether drugs or alcohol were factors. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact CHP’s San Diego office.
