Highway 243 Accident
MOUNTAIN CENTER, California (May 5, 2014) — Ron Barney, 25, of Anza was killed and another person was moderately injured after a collision Saturday night between the drivers of an SUV and a car on Highway 243 about half a mile north of State Route 74, according to a press release by the Riverside County Fire Department.
About 8:44 p.m., CAL Fire/Riverside County Firefighters and California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash between the two drivers and had to extricate people who were trapped in the wreckage. Mercy Air Ambulance transported the injured person to a nearby hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, the report said.
Barney was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash about 9:04 p.m.
“This is a tragedy for the family and friends of Mr. Barney,” said Attorney James Johnson. “My condolences go out to them as they cope with his sudden loss and try to piece together what happened.”
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
