Multi-Vehicle Costa Mesa Accident 55 Freeway, Paularino Avenue
Multi-Vehicle Crash on Northbound SR-55 Causes Major Traffic Delays
Costa Mesa, CA – (May 9, 2025) — A multi-vehicle collision on northbound State Route 55 just south of Paularino Avenue in Costa Mesa caused significant traffic disruption Friday afternoon, with multiple lanes blocked and emergency services rushing to the scene.
The crash occurred around 2:00 p.m. on May 9th, involving at least three vehicles, including a black Lexus sedan, a silver Toyota Avalon, and a third vehicle with an older male occupant reported unresponsive in the driver’s seat.
Initial reports suggested the man appeared to be in distress, prompting concerns of a possible fatality, though authorities later confirmed no fatalities at the scene.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision blocked the middle lanes of northbound SR-55, with some vehicles left disabled in live traffic lanes. Fire and emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after and assisted, including evaluating injuries and helping clear the wreckage.
Tow services from Metro Pro and Southside were dispatched to remove the vehicles, including a flatbed for one of the more heavily damaged cars. Crews worked quickly to move vehicles into the gore point and reopen lanes, with CHP confirming the roadway was fully cleared by 2:28 p.m.
Traffic backups extended toward the SR-55/405 interchange during the incident, and CHP urged drivers to remain alert and patient in the area.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Ana office.
