Multi-Vehicle Crash on 5 Freeway, Flume Creek Road in Shasta County
Major Injury Crash Involving Semi-Truck, Two Cars Today
MOUNT SHASTA, Calif., (May 12, 2026) — A three-vehicle crash happened Tuesday morning on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway, near Flume Creek Road in Castella, just south of Mount Shasta. The incident, which occurred on May 12th at 9:25 a.m., resulted in significant injuries and traffic disturbances in the area.
The drivers of a blue Subaru, a white Volvo, and a semi-truck were involved, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The semi-truck reportedly rear-ended another vehicle amid a traffic jam. A female occupant in one of the vehicles sustained a large gash on her head and an injury to her leg. It is unclear at this time if there are additional injuries among other involved parties.
Emergency responders, including CAL FIRE and local ambulance services, arrived promptly on the scene. The CHP changed the incident classification to a major injury collision, indicating the severity of injuries sustained.
Traffic disruptions were significant, with lanes intermittently closed to allow emergency services to assist victims and clear the wreckage. Two vehicles were towed and the third vehicle drove away on its onw. By 10:12 a.m., efforts were underway to open a lane to alleviate the traffic backlog that extended to Sweetbriar.
Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision. They urge any witnesses to come forward with information that could assist in the investigation.
