Multi-Vehicle Pileup Crash I-680 Freeway, Diablo Road in Danville
Up to 10 Vehicles Involved in Pileup Collision on Interstate 680 Freeway
DANVILLE, Calif. (August 27, 2026) — A multi-vehicle crash temporarily shut down all northbound lanes of Interstate 680 Freeway near Diablo Road Thursday afternoon in Danville, causing significant traffic delays, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was reported around 1:25 p.m. Aug. 27 on northbound I-680 just south of Diablo Road, near the Sycamore Valley Road off-ramp. Initial reports indicated seven vehicles were involved, although dispatchers said as many as eight to 10 vehicles may have been involved.
Several vehicles were reported blocking the freeway, with airbags deployed and multiple people outside their vehicles. The vehicles initially described in the crash included a gray sedan, gray Volvo SUV, gray Toyota Prius and an unidentified white vehicle. An Audi and another vehicle were also reported involved.
San Ramon firefighters responded to the scene and eventually closed all northbound lanes while crews worked the crash. At approximately 1:57 p.m., CHP issued a SIGALERT, advising that all lanes were blocked and urging drivers to use an alternate route.
A tow company was requested to respond with resources capable of removing six vehicles. The Diablo Road on-ramp to northbound I-680 was also requested to be closed.
Traffic conditions gradually improved during the afternoon. By about 2 p.m., Lane 1 had reopened, followed shortly afterward by additional lanes. By 2:19 p.m., CHP reported that lanes 1 through 3 were open, while Lane 4 remained blocked.
The crash was initially classified as a traffic collision with an unknown number of injuries. Authorities had not released information about the extent of any injuries as of the latest CHP updates.
Drivers traveling northbound I-680 should continue to expect delays while crews clear the remaining lane blockage.
