DUI Suspect Fled Fatal Collision on I-15 Freeway
TEMECULA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2024) — Nancy Arzate, 33, died Saturday in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver on the Interstate 15 Freeway in Temecula.
The deadly collision occurred on the northbound I-15 at around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14th, between Temecula Parkway and Santiago Road, according to the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner.
The Perris woman reportedly lost control of her 2011 Toyota Camry and hit an object on the side of the freeway. She exited her vehicle after it came to a stop sideways in traffic lanes.
That’s when a driver in a 2003 Ford Edge reportedly struck the victim as she stood near her disabled vehicle.
The 26-year-old Carlsbad man driving the Ford never swerved to avoid hitting her as a previous driver had done and hit her at 70 mph.
Mason Michael Joachim then got out of his vehicle and fled on foot.
Meanwhile, several other motorists stopped to help the woman, but she died a short time later at 10:03 p.m. on scene.
The Riverside County Fire Department pronounced the woman dead and she was later identified as Nancy Arzate.
Finally, police managed to locate the suspect roughly 30 minutes after the collision and he was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
He was later arrested and booked on suspicion of second-degree murder, driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury, hit-and-run causing death, and driving on a suspended license, according to CHP.
Also, the driver is being held on $1 million bail.
