Nathan Smith, 9, Fatal Skateboard Accident Puerto Place Dana Point

DANA POINT, California (June 27, 2017) — Nathan Smith, 9, of Dana Point was struck by a car Sunday afternoon while skitching — riding a skateboard while hitching a ride holding onto a car — in Puerto Place, just south of Dana Point Harbor Drive, according to a report by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner.

The skateboard accident took place about 5:49 p.m. The boy was riding his skateboard and allegedly holding on to the window of his family car when he lost control, fell off and was struck by a van driving by his 21-year-old sister. The boy was tragically ran over by the van. A second boy who was also holding onto the car was not hurt. Paramedics responded and transported the injured child to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo where he later died at 6:47 p.m. the same day.

A Go Fund Me page was established to help the family with funeral and medical costs.
