Major Injury Crash in National City on I-5 Freeway
NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (April 19, 2022) — Five people suffered injuries Tuesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway in the South Bay area.
The National City traffic accident occurred just after 5 a.m. on April 19th on northbound I-5, just north of state Route 54, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Paramedics responded to the 3-vehicle crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway. One person became trapped in the wreckage. Firefighters rescued the person and reported a total of five people were treated and or taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital.
It is unclear what caused the wreck, but authorities are piecing together evidence and witness statements to determine fault.
One person was briefly trapped in a vehicle and had to be rescued by emergency responders.
The incident led to a heavy backup on the northbound I-5 lanes stretching to J Street in Chula Vista during the typically busy morning commute.
