Canoga Park Man, 20, Killed in Hit-and-run Collision
CANOGA PARK, Calif. (June 30, 2022) – Nelson Castaneda, 20, of Canoga Park, died in a hit-and-run crash on June 28th at DeSoto Avenue and Vanowen Street in Canoga Park.
Police are now searching for the suspect who fled on foot.
The deadly, two-vehicle collision occurred about 12:30 a.m. at the Canoga Park intersection.
A driver in a black Dodge Ram truck allegedly ran through a red traffic light and slammed into a Lexus driven by Nelson Castaneda.
During the collision, the Lexus struck a utility pole and the victim was ejected from the vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He suffered major injuries and died from blunt force trauma on scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff Coroner.
Authorities investigating the crash report the Dodge Ram was traveling at a high-rate of speed estimated at more than 80 miles an hour.
The airbags in the Dodge reportedly exploded. Also, debris from the collision scattered across the roadway.
Police report the driver of the Dodge Ram ran fled on foot from the scene. However, an LAPD K-9 unit tracked the suspect until about 5 a.m. Authorities continue to seek the whereabouts of the motorist.
The investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing.
