Police Arrest Suspect in July 2022 Hit-and-run Crash
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (May 3, 2023) — Nery Lopez, 47, of Cudahy, California, has been arrested on hit-and-run charges for an injury motorcycle accident on July 30th last year on West Balboa Boulevard in Newport Beach.
The alleged crime occurred around 8:16 p.m. on July 30th at 26th Street, according to the Newport Beach Police Department and the Independent.
Police believe that Nery Lopez was driving a silver Jeep and collided with the motorcyclist and ran him over. The rider, Mike Landry, was taken to a hospital with a dozen fractures and injuries. The Jeep also crashed into several parked vehicles before its driver fled on foot. A dash camera recorded the incident.
The suspect’s vehicle was impounded and authorities began searching for its driver, but never found him.
However, the Newport Beach Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) conducted a full investigation into the case and eventually pieced together enough evidence to locate the suspect.
On April 14, 2023, Nery Lopez was arrested in Los Angeles County and four days later he was arraigned in Orange County Superior Court. He plead not guilty to charges of one felony count of driving under the influence while causing injury, one felony count of hit-and-run with injury, four counts of misdemeanor hit-and-run, and one count of driving without a valid driver license.
There is a GoFundMe page to help Mike Landry with medical bills.
