DUI Arrests Expected to Surge on Dec. 31st in California
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Dec. 31, 2024) – Tonight is one of the deadliest days to travel due to the New Year’s Eve holiday because of drunk driving.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 13,524 people died in drunk driving crashes nationwide in 2022, including 1,062 of those deaths in December.
That’s why the CHP plans to use all of its available resources to step up patrols on roads and freeways throughout California.
Starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31st until late Wednesday, Jan. 1st, deputies from the California Highway Patrol will be making arrests for DUI, speeding, and other traffic violations to motorists breaking the law.
“Our officers are committed to working through the holidays to ensure everyone can reach their destinations safely,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. “Safe roads are possible when every driver makes responsible decisions behind the wheel.”
Last year, the CHP’s major traffic enforcement team made 892 arrests statewide on New Year’s Eve and Day, up from 570 arrests the previous year. This year, however, the enforcement period is just 30 hours as it’s mid-week, compared to three days and nights in the 2023-24 holiday weekend.
