Doctor Treated LGBTQ+ Patients at Newport Beach Practice
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 27, 2023) — Dr. William Thompson IV, 56, of Huntington Beach, is being charged with multiple felony counts of alleged sexual misconduct and battery charges on at least nine male patients at his Newport Beach medical practice.
The infectious disease doctor, who is a general practitioner who serves people who identify as LGBTQ+, was arrested at his Newport Beach office on Sept. 20th. He is accused of various sexual acts performed on his patients under the guise of providing a medical examination or treatment, according to a press release by the Orange County District Attorney’s office. The alleged assaults reportedly occurred between 2016 and 2020.
The DA’s office reports Dr. William Thompson IV, who is affiliated with Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, is charged with the following:
- 8 felony counts of sexual penetration by means of fraudulent representation of professional purpose
- 3 felony counts of sexual battery by fraud
- 2 felony counts of forcible oral copulation
Six of the alleged victims came forward to law enforcement to report being sexually assaulted by Thompson after “learning medical procedures being performed on them by Thompson were not medically necessary,” the report said.
One of the male victims was allegedly forced to “orally copulate” on the doctor and others were given “medically unnecessary anal exams,” the D.A. reports.
The doctor’s arrest came after a joint investigation by the California Department of Consumer Affairs and the Newport Beach Police Department.
“Many of Dr. Thompson’s patients depended on him to provide life-saving care and he exploited those vulnerabilities for his own sexual gratification,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer.
The doctor is scheduled to be arraigned in court on November 2nd in Newport Beach at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach in Department H1. However, Thompson remains free on a $100,000 bond.
“He faces a maximum sentence of 30 years to life plus 25 years if convicted on all counts,” the District Attorney’s Office said in a press release.
Finally, anyone with additional information about Thompson’s activities or any other potential victims are asked to call the Newport Beach Police Department at 949-644-3682. Anonymous tips can also be made to 1-800-550-6273.
