NFL Should Speak Out Against Drunk Driving When Players are Arrested

Attorney James Johnson Says NFL Should Take a Stand Against DUI Driving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, but today I want to talk about a subject that will impact many lives over the holiday weekend and that is drunk driving.

Last year, the CHP made over 1,000 DUI arrests during Thanksgiving and there were 27 fatal crashes on highways they patrol here in California.

Drunk driving is responsible for roughly a third of all fatal crashes.

Drunk driving is responsible for roughly a third of all fatal crashes.

So when it caught my attention when I heard in the news this week that a Los Angeles Rams football player was arrested for speeding and allegedly driving drunk in Woodland Hills.

Just days before Thanksgiving, police arrested LA Rams receiver Demarcus Robinson on suspicion of drunk driving after they spotted him driving a white Dodge over 100 mph on the 101 Freeway.

Deputies with the California Highway Patrol pulled over the 30-year-old football player who was “cited and released to a responsible party.”

I bring this up because I think the National Football League has an opportunity to make this right. I believe the NHL should take a stand against drunk driving immediately.

This is not the first NFL player to drive drunk. Many players have not only driven drunk, but some have received multiple DUIs and some have killed innocent people.

  • Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was driving 156 mph with a blood-alcohol content twice Nevada’s legal limit in 2021. That is until he crashed into the back of another vehicle. A woman and her dog burned to death in their car. He was immediately cut from the team and is still serving a 3 to 10 year prison sentence.
  • Donte Stallworth ended his career with the Cleveland Browns when he struck and killed a pedestrian in Florida back in 2009. He was DUI and driving 50 in a 40 mph zone. He was convicted of manslaughter, spent 24 days in jail, and went on to play with three other teams including the Baltimore Ravens. His teammates even awarded him with the Ed Block Courage Award for 2010.
  • Aldon Smith was eventually cut from the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, but it wasn’t until his third DUI. He went on to play with the Oakland Raiders, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Seattle Seahawks. He also received two more DUIs in 2019 and 2021. That’s five DUIs.
Over the years, many of my clients became victims of drunk driving. Some of them eventually recovered from being hurt. Others had permanent injuries and some sought my help after losing a loved one.

We don’t know yet what will happen to Demarcus Robinson. The good news is, he didn’t crash or hurt anyone and let’s hope he never does.
