NHTSA Offers Tips To Help Consumers Avoid Vehicle Theft

The summer months leave us having visions of carefree days at the beach, long days on the golf course and backyard bar-b-ques with friends and family. As routines tend to slacken safety practices can be forgotten or neglected. Even the most trivial habit, such as locking the car, can be overlooked but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants all drivers to keep in mind that vehicle thefts are at their peak during the summer months, particularly in July and August.

Surprisingly enough, the statistics reported by the NHTSA indicate that almost half of all car thefts occur because of precautions the car’s owner has failed to take. Who is most at risk? The top ten States that have the highest incidence of vehicle theft are:

  1. California
  2. Florida
  3. Texas
  4. New York
  5. Illinois
  6. Georgia
  7. New Jersey
  8. Maryland
  9. North Carolina
  10. Nevada

Of all the makes and models of vehicles manufactured today, thieves do seem to have a preference. The cars that are most targeted for theft are:

  1. Dodge Charger
  2. Pontiac G6
  3. Chevrolet Impala
  4. Chrysler 300
  5. Infiniti FX35
  6. Mitsubishi Galant
  7. Chrysler Sebring
  8. Lexus SC
  9. Dodge Avenger
  10. Kia Rio

Authorities are recommending that vehicle owners remember to always take their car keys with them. One of the biggest mistakes a car owner can make is to leave their keys in their car, on their car or even in the ignition! Another tip applies to the times when we are out at night, possibly doing some shopping or going to a movie, and parking our cars. At these times, try to park your car in a well-lit area because most thieves want to avoid being seen; when at home, the ideal place to keep your car would be within your garage. And finally, make sure windows are up and that all valuable items (i.e. cell phones, tablets, wallets, etc.) are taken with you or out of sight.

The first thing you should do is contact an attorney. Without the representation of a lawyer, insurance companies might make contact with you directly, and since they are trained to protect their best interests, this could mean a loss of rights on your behalf, especially if you unknowingly sign something that they didn't completely explain to you. Handling a personal injury claim by yourself is very difficult. You will deal directly with the insurance adjuster who is often trained to obtain the information they are not entitled to use. This information can negatively impact and de-value your case. Once your case is damaged, it is very difficult to repair it and usually costs you thousands of dollars less in a settlement.
