
Nick Cardenas, 23, Critically Injured in Oceanside Crash on State Route 76
OCEANSIDE, CA (February 23, 2023) – A DUI crash left Nick Cardenas critically injured on State Route 76 in Oceanside.
Family members identified the 23-year-old Bonsall man as the victim of the wreck which took place on Monday.
The incident happened when Nick Cardenas was riding a motorcycle near State Route 76 and Benet Road in Oceanside. At the same time, a car ran a red light at the intersection.
Police said the car then slammed into the motorcyclist on eastbound State Route 76. The accident occurred on February 20 shortly before 6:15 p.m.
Robert Shuey, 67, ID’d as DUI Suspect in Wreck
Nick Cardenas ended up thrown off his bike as a result of the crash. The ABC 10 News and San Diego Union Tribune reported that his helmet flew off in the process.
The victim sustained life-threatening injuries, including several broken bones and brain trauma. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital and placed him in a coma.
Meanwhile, police determined that the 67-year-old San Clemente man driving the car was under the influence when he hit the rider. They soon arrested Robert Shuey on suspicion of DUI.
Officers at the Central Jail found the suspect unresponsive in his cell a day later. The Oceanside DUI crash is still under investigation.
