Kayaker Killed in Marina Del Rey Accident Identified as Nicole Willett
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2018) – Nicole Willett, 46, of Venice was struck and killed by a power boat while kayaking in Marina del Rey on Labor Day, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Willett was kayaking near the south jetty when she was fatally injured about 1:10 p.m. The 50-foot vessel that struck Willett was occupied by two people in their 60s. They reportedly didn’t realize they had struck the kayak, but occupants of a nearby fishing boat saw what happened and alerted them about the accident.
Police investigating the fatality interviewed them both over several hours and determined they were within posted speed limits and drugs and or alcohol were not factors. There was no crime that occurred.
Willett worked as chief of staff of the Department on Disability since December 2014, according to her LinkedIn page.
BOAT ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION
In the aftermath of this boating collision, police are reviewing the facts and determining what caused the crash and who is liable. While there may not be criminal charges, a civil lawsuit for this woman’s wrongful death could be filed against the responsible boat owner and or operator.
If you were injured or have lost a loved one in a boating accident, it’s likely that there will be significant financial losses such as medical bills, lost wages and more.
