Man, 19, Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Tanker Truck
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2024) – Nivardo Martinez Alarcon, 19, was killed and others were injured in a multi-vehicle tanker truck crash on the Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles.
The deadly crash also resulted in an aviation fuel spill of roughly 2,000 gallons onto the northbound freeway traffic lanes, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred around 10:55 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2nd near the Manchester Avenue off-ramp, the LAFD reported.
The vehicles involved included a black Honda Accord, a silver Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Highlander SUV, the CHP reports.
Responding firefighters located the young man dead in a vehicle crushed underneath the overturned tanker truck. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner has now identified the victim as 19-year-old Nivardo Martinez Alarcon.
Also, a 52-year-old Chino man from another vehicle was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. A 30-year-old woman was also treated and taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Two other men in the other two vehicles did not report any injuries.
Freightliner Truck Hits Vehicles, Overturns
Investigators working on the case determined the 56-year-old Riverside man driving the 2018 Freightliner tanker truck veered from the No. 3 lane across several traffic lanes into the express lanes where it hit four vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Emergency crews responded and located found the overturned truck and several other vehicles it collided with along the freeway. There was also aviation fuel that spilled onto the freeway that required cleanup. Firefighters managed to stop the tanker leak with a redwood plug and save another 8,000 gallons of fuel from coming out of the tanker.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert and police continue to investigate the collision.
