NORTH HILLS, California (April 18, 2016) — A 37-year-old riding in a white minivan carrying eight people was killed and eight others including four children were seriously injured Sunday afternoon when the van was hit by a speeding SUV at 8700 Haskell Avenue, at Parthenia Street, a Los Angeles Fire Department report said.
UPDATE: The man who died has been identified as Jose Luis Garcia Alonso.
The crash took place about 1:05 p.m. The white 2000 Toyota 4Runner’s 20-year-old female driver identified as Saidy Samayoa was fleeing an earlier crash when she struck the minivan and it overturned onto its roof.
The first collision took place when the SUV allegedly made a U-turn in front of another car. The victim in that crash suffered a broken arm and internal injuries. Despite her injuries, that driver briefly followed the suspect until the SUV began speeding away. At some point, the suspect’s vehicle was traveling westbound on Parthenia Street and that is when it struck the minivan which was heading northbound on Haskell Avenue.
The two vehicles collided in a violent crash that prompted a response by more than 60 firefighters, the LAFD reported. Eight of the nine injured suffered critical injured and multiple victims were ejected in the crash. The children were ages 4 to 12 years old, ABC News reported. The children who are ages 8 and 10 years old suffered major injuries. Two of the injured were passengers in the SUV.
Both helicopters and ground ambulances rushed the nine victims including three or four children to local hospitals and a pediatric trauma center for treatment of major injuries.
The Mayors Crisis Response Team was also sent to the hospital to help family members of the victims cope with the tragedy.
The driver of the Toyota 4Runner will most likely face multiple felony charges including hit-and-run causing major injuries and death.
The LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division is heading up an investigation into the fatal crash and is asking witnesses to contact them at (818) 644-8020.
