NUEVO, California (March 25, 2015) — One person was killed and four others including two children suffered major injuries Wednesday afternoon in a fiery car accident involving three drivers on the Ramona Expressway near Hanson Avenue, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Several people were trapped following the crash and one of the cars involved that was on fire. It appears they were rescued by firefighters with the CAL FIRE/Riverside County Firefighters who responded about 1 p.m.
Three ambulances were at the scene to transport victims to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley.
Police say the man who died in the crash was driving a Mercedes at a high rate of speed prior to the accident. Witnesses told authorities the driver was driving reckless, passing other vehicles by entering opposing traffic and driving onto the right shoulder before rear-ending an elderly woman driving a white car whose driver overturned into a field. She suffered major injuries in the crash.
The impact caused the Mercedes to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic where it collided with the driver of a gray car and overturned. The Mercedes then burst into flames and the driver was trapped inside and died. The man driving the gray car and his passengers, a juvenile girl and a 2-year-old toddler, were all critically injured in the crash.
“Hopefully those injured in this crash are provided with the best care available for a full recovery,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Police will investigate the circumstances that led to the crash and issue a report with their findings.”
