Fiery Crash on 580 Freeway in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. (Sept. 19, 2023) — A fatal Oakland crash on the Interstate 580 Freeway happened Tuesday near Beaumont Avenue.
The two-vehicle collision occurred on the eastbound I-580 around 11 a.m. on Sept. 19th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported the drivers of a white SUV and a white Chevrolet Volt were involved. The SUV allegedly T-boned the smaller vehicle “at a high rate of speed” due to unknown circumstances, the report said. The Volt sustained major side damage and the SUV caught on fire and became fully engulfed in flames, the report said.
Other vehicles including a semi-truck may have also been involved, the report said.
The Oakland Fire Department responded and located at least one person with major injuries. They transported the injured by ambulance to Highland Hospital. Later, police confirmed one person died after the crash.
The case remains under investigation to determine fault for the crash on the 580 Freeway in Oakland.
