9 Injured in Oakland Crash at International Boulevard and 38th Avenue
OAKLAND, CA (September 10, 2021) – Several were injured after a DUI hit-and-run crash at International Boulevard and 38th Avenue in Oakland.
According to the East Bay Times and KRON 4 News, the accident occurred on Thursday night. Officers reported the wreck at about 8:39 p.m. in the Fruitvale district.
The incident happened on September 9 when a Honda Odyssey was going north on 38th Avenue in Oakland. At the same time, a Pontiac G6 was traveling at about 90 mph east on International Boulevard.
Police said the Pontiac, weaving in an out of a bus lane, then ran a red light at the intersection. The speeding car broadsided the van carrying a family of nine.
The Pontiac came to a rest after hitting a Jeep Wrangler that was stopped in the 3800 block of International Boulevard.
Man Arrested For DUI and Hit-and-Run
A 2-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl riding the Honda ended up ejected upon impact. Paramedics rushed them to a hospital and listed them in critical condition with severe head trauma.
Medical personnel took the other seven occupants of the Odyssey, four children and three adults, to hospitals for treatment of unspecified injuries.
Officials did not release the names of all the wounded parties and their condition at this time. Meanwhile, police affirmed that the 32-year-old man driving the Pontiac tried to flee on foot.
Officers caught him and determined that he was under the influence of alcohol when he struck the other vehicles. They soon arrested the injured suspect for DUI and hit-and-run.
Authorities forced the area of International Boulevard and 38th Avenue to shut down for hours following the wreck. The Oakland crash is still under investigation.
