1 Killed, 5 Seriously Injured in Oakland Crash on Highway 24 Near Shattuck Avenue
OAKLAND, CA (May 21, 2022) – A wrong-way DUI crash killed one person and seriously injured several others on Highway 24 in Oakland.
According to The Mercury News and KRON 4 News, the tragic accident took place early Saturday. Officers reported the wreck at about 2 a.m.
The incident began when a Mercedes was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Highway 24 in Oakland. At the same time, a Mazda was going east.
The California Highway Patrol said the Mercedes then slammed head-on into the Mazda. The two crashed near Shattuck Avenue.
Wrong-Way DUI Driver Hits Another Car
A woman riding the Mazda died at the scene. Four other occupants of the Mazda and the wrong-way driver sustained major injuries as a result of the collision.
CHP affirmed that the suspect ran on foot over the highway shoulder following the wreck. They located him and believed that he was under the influence of alcohol when he hit the victims.
Officers soon took the motorist who caused the incident into custody. Meanwhile, paramedics rushed all five patients to the hospital for treatment.
The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released. CHP forced the eastbound lanes of Highway 24 to shut down near Shattuck after the collision.
The fatal Oakland wrong-way crash is still under investigation.
