Woman Killed in Oakland Wrong-Way Hit-and-Run Crash on Interstate 80
OAKLAND, CA (September 6, 2021) – A woman was killed after a wrong-way hit-and-run crash on the Interstate 80 in Oakland.
According to the East Bay Times and NBC Bay Area, the tragic accident took place early Monday. Officers reported the wreck at about 1:12 a.m.
The incident began when a Chevrolet Impala was traveling the wrong-way on the eastbound Interstate 80 in Oakland. In the process, the Chevrolet slammed into a Volkswagen Jetta.
The California Highway Patrol said the Volkswagen became fully engulfed in flames. The burning car ended up partially over a guard rail near the eastbound Interstate 580 connector.
Wrong-Way Driver Hits Another Car, Flees on Foot
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced the woman driving the Jetta dead at the scene. Her name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that the male driver of the Impala abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. They found him on the bike path below the freeway.
Medical personnel brought him to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Authorities soon arrested and took him into custody.
CHP forced all eastbound lanes of the Interstate 80 to shut down for about three hours following the wreck. The fatal Oakland wrong-way hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
