OAKLAND: Truck Accident Highway 24 Near the Caldecott Tunnel

Major Traffic Collision on State Route 24, Old Tunnel Road
OAKLAND, Calif., (August 17, 2026) — A major injury accident involving a box truck and a pickup truck occurred Monday on eastbound Highway 24 near the Tunnel Road offramp before the Caldecott Tunnel.
The incident was reported at approximately 2:16 p.m. on August 17th, 2026. A green and blue “Got Junk” box truck collided with a white Ford pickup truck, blocking the fast lane and causing substantial traffic disruption. The collision was initially classified as having unknown injuries but was later updated to a major-injury traffic collision by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Emergency responders, including fire services and towing companies, were dispatched to the scene. One of the drivers was taken by ambulance to a hospital with a leg injury. Meanwhile, Atlas Towing and R and R Towing were among the companies responding to remove vehicles involved in the collision. The junk truck had its front end and windshield smashed. Due to the severity of the crash, the CHP requested additional support for vehicle removal, indicating the involvement of a medium-duty towing operation.
Investigations are ongoing as the CHP works to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have called for any witnesses to the incident to come forward with information that may aid in the investigation.
