Odie Ervin II, 51, Killed Attempting to Stop Hit-and-run Driver
LONG BEACH, California (August 14, 2017) — Odie Ervin II, 51, of Los Angeles was killed early Monday morning when he jumped onto the running board of an SUV in an attempt to stop a hit-and-run driver from fleeing after he struck a fellow bicyclist on Long Beach Boulevard near the 91 Freeway.
Police say the suspect in a 2000 Ford Expedition struck the first bicyclist about 1:20 p.m. and then as he fled the scene, Ervin attempted to stop the suspect from driving away. The report states that Ervin was standing on the running board of the SUV and tried to grab the suspect’s car keys to turn off the vehicle.
The driver made a turn and the man fell off near Long Beach Boulevard at Bort Street. The victim struck his head on the ground and died at the scene.
The driver of a Ford SUV had been heading south on Long Beach Boulevard when the vehicle struck the first man.
After Ervin was thrown off the vehicle, the suspect stopped and fled on foot into a nearby neighborhood. Ervin died of his injuries at the scene of the horrific crash.
The first bicyclist who was hit suffered non-serious injuries in the collision and was treated at the scene.
Police are piecing together what happened and attempting to identify, locate and arrest the suspect driver.

The facts in this particular case state that the initial collision took place on Long Beach Boulevard. The SUV driver did not stop and was confronted by Ervin.
