Suspect Arrested After Car Accident Near Fruitvale BART Station
Oakland, CA (May 16, 2023) – At least one officer suffered injuries following a car accident that occurred in the area of 35th Avenue and 12th Street Tuesday, May 16.
The FOX2 News reported deputies spotted a stolen vehicle traveling on the Interstate 580 in San Leandro around 2 p.m. Preliminary investigation revealed deputies followed the stolen vehicle until it was safe to conduct a traffic stop.
Stolen Vehicle Rams Patrol Cars in Oakland
According to the article published online, the suspect drove in the area near Fruitvale BART station. Our sources indicated 27-year-old Jose Barajas-Avalos, of Oakland, intentionally rammed three occupied patrol vehicles in a parking lot at 35th Avenue and 12th Street. The force from the impact left two police cars disabled, and at least one deputy suffering in minor injuries. The name of the victim remained undisclosed pending confirmation.
Officials mentioned the suspect managed to escape but was eventually tracked by the aircraft of sheriff’s department. Police arrested Jose Barajas-Avalos and booked him into the Santa Rita Jail for multiple felony offenses.
At this time, detectives continue to investigate several unclear factors surrounding the crash that happened at 35th Avenue and 12th Street in Oakland.
