One Dead, Two Injured in Fiery Crash at Union and California Avenues in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (June 11, 2025) — One person is dead, two injured after a late-night crash at Union Avenue and East California Avenue in southeast Bakersfield.
The fiery two-vehicle crash at 11:30 p.m. last night involved speed and alcohol, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Investigators working on the case reported a white BMW was heading northbound on Union Avenue when its driver allegedly ran a red light. The car slammed into a westbound Dodge Charger traveling on East California Avenue. Surveillance and witness video captured the moment the BMW erupted in flames following the impact.
The driver of the Dodge Charger sustained major injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. His identity has not yet been released, pending notification from the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
The BMW’s driver was also hospitalized with moderate injuries. A passenger in that vehicle suffered critical injuries and remains in unstable condition, police said.
Authorities believe both speed and alcohol played roles in the crash. The intersection was shut down for several hours overnight as traffic investigators processed the scene.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is urged to contact Bakersfield police at (661) 327-7111.
