One Person Killed in Crash at 2nd Street and Z Street, Riverside County
Fatal Car Accident at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. (June 23, 2026) — A driver died Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle crash involving a Ford Explorer and a Nissan Sentra near the intersection of 2nd Street and Z Street at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch records.
The victim was also reportedly shot and seriously injured, but it’s unknown if the shooting was first or the traffic accident.
The collision was reported on June 23rd at approximately 6:43 a.m. when authorities received reports of a Ford Explorer, described as a K-9 vehicle from an unknown agency, and a Nissan Sentra involved in a crash at the intersection.
Initial reports indicated there were no injuries. However, the incident quickly escalated after emergency responders arrived on scene. At approximately 6:50 a.m., dispatch logs noted that an occupant was unresponsive inside a vehicle and that a weapon was reportedly present. Authorities later updated the incident from a non-injury traffic collision to a fatal crash investigation.
Firefighters and law enforcement personnel responded to the scene, and a tow truck was requested shortly after 7:00 a.m. Riverside County Sheriff’s Office personnel coordinated with investigators throughout the morning.
By 8:06 a.m., CHP records indicated the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office would respond to Riverside University Health System Medical Center. A name appearing in dispatch records, identified only as Gonzales, was logged later in the investigation, though authorities have not officially released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin. However, more recent reports stated the victim was a contractor with the American Forces Network, a Department of Defense-operated broadcasting service that serves U.S. military personnel with radio and TV broadcasting.
The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation. Officials have not yet announced whether speed, impairment, a medical emergency, or other factors contributed to the crash.
Anyone with information regarding the collision is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol or the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
