ONTARIO, California (October 7, 2016) –– Kyle Briones, 28, of Ontario died in police custody early Wednesday morning shortly after a solo-vehicle collision on Archibald Avenue, just south of Ontario Ranch Road, according to the San Bernardino Sun.
The cause of his death is under investigation, but police had initially suspect Briones was intoxicated after they responded to the scene of the solo crash about 1:30 a.m. Police found Briones unconscious in his vehicle which had crashed into a curb and street sign. His mouth was bleeding and he was seated in the driver’s seat.
Briones was awakened by police and was observed staggering, but police attributed this to impairment because the man became agitated and was struggling with them.
Police put Briones in handcuffs, but he lost consciousness again so firefighters were called to the scene to help. They transported him to a local hospital where he died. The police officers were placed on routine administrative leave while the case is investigated.
An autopsy was performed Thursday by the San Bernardino County coroner to determine what caused the young man’s death. A previously existing medical condition was identified and authorities believe it contributed to Briones’ death. The report does not confirm whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the man’s death, but police are reviewing videotape from the incident.
