
Bicyclist Killed in Car Accident in San Pedro
SAN PEDRO, Calif. (March 7, 2023) – Oscar Montoya, 51, died in a hit-and-run car accident while riding his bicycle on Pacific Avenue in San Pedro.
The fatal crash occurred about 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, March 4th as he rode northbound on Pacific Avenue, just south of Channel Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
At the same time, a driver in a small, light-colored car was heading northbound on Pacific Avenue and reportedly struck the victim. The bicyclist was thrown off the bike into the roadway.

Meanwhile, the driver failed to stop and help Oscar Montoya. The person fled the scene, but there is no description of the suspect or vehicle at this time. Sadly, the bicyclist suffered major injuries and died before he could be taken to a hospital.

Bicycle Accident Statistics in Los Angeles
The number of people injured or killed in bicycle accidents in Los Angeles County is staggering.
The Office of Traffic Safety reports some 2,601 people were injured or died in a collision between a bicyclist and a vehicle in 2020. They were among the 65,377 people who were injured or died in a collision in LA county. Furthermore, the area had 7,184 hit-and-run collisions resulting in injuries or deaths, down possibly due to the pandemic from 8,547 in 2017.
