Bicyclist Injured in Palm Desert Car Accident at Portola Avenue
PALM DESERT, Calif. (Friday, October 25, 2019) — An 82-year-old Palm Desert man riding a bicycle suffered serious injuries Friday morning when he was struck by a vehicle at Portola Avenue and Silver Sands Parkway.
The crash was reported at approximately 7:06 AM, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say the motorist was traveling eastbound on Hovley Lane West when he turned left or northbound onto Portola Avenue. That’s when he struck the bicyclist who was heading westbound on Silver Sands Parkway where it meets and turns into Hovley Lane West. The bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown off his bicycle and suffered serious injuries.
The bicycle rider suffered serious injuries, however, he was alert and breathing after the crash. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital for treatment. The 77-year-old Palm Desert man who was driving the vehicle stopped and cooperated with the police investigation.
It appears that the bicyclist may have been crossing Portola Avenue in the opposite direction to the vehicle, possibly in one of four marked crosswalk here. The cyclist would have the right-of-way on a green light and the driver would be required to yield to him before making their left turn. Hopefully there are witnesses to help piece together what happened and help police determine fault.
Witnesses or anyone with any information about the crash are asked to contact Deputy Varon Potter at the Palm Desert Station’s Traffic Team at (760) 836-1600 or call anonymously at (760) 341-STOP (7867) and reference incident #T192980012.
