Passenger Killed in Crash on Interstate 5 in San Diego was Zachary Goodall

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 16, 2026) — Zachary Ryan Goodall, 25, of San Diego, died following a late-night crash involving two vehicles on Interstate 5 near Clairemont in San Diego, authorities said.
The collision was reported shortly before 11:41 p.m. Sunday, June 14, on northbound Interstate 5 south of Clairemont Drive, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch records.
Initial reports indicated an unknown vehicle had gone off the right shoulder and down an embankment. A second vehicle was later determined to be involved in the crash.
An off-duty firefighter who came upon the scene reported finding one of the vehicles severely damaged, with a person pinned behind the steering wheel and dashboard. Dispatch logs indicate the vehicle was beginning to smoke, and the firefighter was unable to remove the trapped victim.
Emergency crews responded to the scene beneath the Clairemont bridge area, where San Diego Police Department officers assisted with traffic and incident coordination.
Goodall suffered critical injuries and was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he later died, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. The location of injury was listed as northbound Interstate 5 south of Clairemont.
Tow trucks were called to recover the damaged vehicles, and lane closures remained in place for several hours as investigators worked the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. It was not immediately clear what factors led to the vehicle leaving the roadway or how the second vehicle became involved.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol.
