PAUMA VALLEY, California (July 6, 2016) — A motorcyclist identified as John Van Wyke, 78, of Rialto, died and three others were injured Wednesday afternoon when the driver of a 2006 Honda Civic veered into the path of three motorcycle riders in a crash on Highway 76 at Cole Grade Road, the California Highway Patrol report said. The crash took place just down the road from the Pauma Indian Reservation and Casino.
The CHP report stated the crash took place about 1 p.m. today. Van Wyke was riding a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle upon being struck on the side by a Honda.
The Rialto man sadly suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A second rider suffered moderate to major injuries when his bike veered to the right in an attempt to avoid crashing into the car. The 73-year-old Highland man was riding a 2014 Harley Davidson bike. He was ejected from the bike and fell onto the roadway. Paramedics took him to a local hospital for treatment, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The third motorcycle rider was able to avoid crashing completely.
The 18-year-old driver of the car suffered a broken arm and her passenger who is 20 years old was hospitalized with major life-threatening injuries. The man was airlifted to a local hospital after the crash.
Police issued a SigAlert due to heavy traffic and closed down Highway 76, diverting buses from the casino to Valley Center Road.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, but initial findings indicate the woman driving the Honda Civic is likely to be found at fault.
