Deadly Collision at Riverside Intersection
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Oct. 24, 2024) — A 72-year-old man died Monday in a pedestrian accident at Altadena Drive and Biscayne Avenue in Riverside.
The traffic accident occurred around 5 p.m. on Oct. 21st, according to the Riverside Police Department.
A 38-year-old from Riverside was driving a silver Chevrolet Equinox westbound on Altadena Drive when they struck the man who was standing in traffic lanes. There are no stop signs at this intersection for traffic on Altadena Drive, but there is a stop for motorists traveling on Biscayne. Also, the speed limit in residential areas of Riverside is 25 mph here.
Paramedics responded and transported the injured man to a hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
“Older pedestrians are at far greater risk of being struck by a vehicle crossing the road,” said Attorney James Johnson. “This was a residential neighborhood and should be a safe place for pedestrians.”
Meanwhile, the Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is heading up the investigation into what happened and will determine if speed or distracted driving was a factor.
Authorities have not released the man’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
