Pedestrian Struck by Bakersfield Police Vehicle During Emergency Response

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (June 17, 2024) — A Bakersfield police vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian early Monday in a fatal crash while responding to a call on South Union Avenue.

The deadly crash occurred at 3:30 a.m. on June 17th in the 1500 block of South Union Avenue, according to KGET News.

Two police officers occupied the vehicle as it traveled north in response to a call in the downtown area.

The police vehicle struck the pedestrian in the roadway, causing major injuries and the person died on scene, the report said. The person’s name, gender and age were not released.

Also, one of the two officers in the cruiser was treated for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the Bakersfield Police Department is conducting a critical incident investigation into the traffic accident and both of the police officers are now on administrative leave, police said.

Witnesses to the crash should call the Bakersfield Police Dept. at 661-327-7111. Finally, Bakersfield police are heading up the investigation into the crash on S. Union Avenue.
