Driver Hits Pedestrian on State Route 163 on Monday Night
SAN DIEGO, Calif., (Oct. 5, 2026) — A fatal San Diego crash involving a pedestrian happened Monday night on State Route 163 South, near the Interstate 8 East connector.
Authorities were alerted to the incident shortly after 8:28 p.m. on Oct. 5th when a report came in about a possible pedestrian being struck, the California Highway Patrol report said. The driver of a gray Hyundai Sonata reported thinking they had hit a pedestrian in the construction lane but could not locate anyone at the scene. The incident prompted a swift response from local emergency services.
Upon arrival, units confirmed a fatality at the scene, although the identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The San Diego Police Department coordinated with the California Highway Patrol to manage the scene and reroute traffic, with closures extending to the eastbound ramp of State Route 163.
Emergency responders, including paramedics and fire units, were dispatched to the scene, and traffic control measures were implemented to facilitate the ongoing investigation. The area remained closed for several hours as officers conducted a detailed examination of the site.
