SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (July 23, 2024) — A fatal Encinitas pedestrian accident happened on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
It happened at around 2:35 p.m. on July 22nd when a driver struck the man man attempting to run across the HOV lane of the freeway.
A driver in a white Tesla Model Y struck the pedestrian, just north of Birmingham Drive, the CHP report said.
Paramedics responded to the scene, but the man died before medical could transport him to a hospital.
Meanwhile, the driver from the Tesla was not injured. The person stopped and cooperated with police.
Investigators are working on the case to determine fault. Witnesses to the collision may contact the CHP’s Oceanside office at (760) 643-3400.
