Deadly Hit-and-run Crash on State Route 78 in Oceanside
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (June 25, 2024) — A driver struck and killed a pedestrian early Tuesday walking in the middle of traffic lanes on state Route 78 in Oceanside.
The deadly, hit-and-run traffic accident occurred in the 2200 block of South El Camino Real at around 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25th, according to the California Highway Patrol and the Times of San Diego.
The motorist hit the person in the eastbound lanes of the freeway between Jefferson Street and El Camino Real, according to the CHP traffic dispatch report.
The adult male pedestrian suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP officials report a witness saw the driver hit the pedestrian and continue traveling eastbound on SR-79. Later, the Oceanside Police Department located a convertible Mercedes with traffic damage in the parking lot of a Winco Foods grocery store. The male driver was seen fleeing the scene.
Investigators are working to locate the suspect.
