Peggy Sue Whitehurst Killed in Rollover Crash on Salt Creek Road
Woman, 65, Killed; Driver Hospitalized in Shasta County Car Accident
LAKEHEAD, Calif. (April 6, 2026) — Peggy Sue Whitehurst, 65, of Eugene, Ore., died following a rollover crash that happened last Wednesday afternoon on Salt Creek Road in Lakehead, in Shasta County.
The traffic accident occurred around 11:52 a.m. on April 1st, north of Nelson Point Park Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Whitehurst was a passenger in a 2012 Kia, driven by Aleen Green, 81, of Springfield, Ore. The pair was traveling in an area just south of Lakehead when the driver allowed the vehicle to drift toward the concrete median between the northbound and southbound lanes.
Green tried to avoid hitting the divider and overcorrected before the vehicle spun out of control, police said. The car hit the divider and then crashed into the rocky embankment before it overturned onto its roof.
CHP officials were alerted by the iPhone traffic collision notification system. Upon arrival, they located a driver and passenger in a red Kia Rio who were injured in the crash, including one who was given CPR at the scene before being taken to a hospital.
A tow truck was reported to have removed the damaged vehicle from the crash scene.
It’s unknown at this time what led up to the collision, but police are investigating.
