August 6, 2018- According to the Press-Democrat, a man identified as Peter Howe, 59, was badly injured after being hit by a car while walking along Highway 1 during the early stages of Sunday.

At roughly 12:30 a.m., Howe was struck by a 2006 Ford driven by Tricia Godwin, 51. It remains unclear whether the 59-year-old man had been walking in the middle of the highway or along the shoulder.

Howe Remains in Critical Condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital

Howe suffered significant injuries as a result and was initially rushed to Mendocino Coast District Hospital before being flown to Santa Rosa Memorial.

Authorities confirmed that Godwin remained at the scene after the accident and did not appear to have been under the influence, per the Press Democrat.

Meanwhile, Howe was last updated to have been in critical condition and was suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol either.

California Highway Patrol officials are currently handling the investigation.

Based on the information provided in this report, it remains unclear which party will ultimately be held liable for the collision. Authorities will thoroughly look into how fast the driver was going, whether or not alcohol or drugs were involved, whether or not there were any mechanical issues with the truck. The investigation will also consist of looking at measurements of evidence left by the truck such as point of impact, final resting positions of each vehicle, skid marks, and gouge marks.

In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing may have been a factor, Peter Howe may be subject to a personal injury lawsuit against the driver of the semi-truck pending the findings of the investigation. Personal injury victims are entitled to compensation for damages including medical expenses and hospital bills, lost future income, and pain and suffering.
