DUI Driver in Calistoga Head-On Crash ID’d as Philip Popick, 30
CALISTOGA, CA (March 15, 2021) – Authorities detained Philip Popick after a fatal DUI crash along Highway 29 near Calistoga.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 30-year-old Calistoga man was under the influence of drugs when the accident occurred on Monday.
The incident happened when Philip Popick was driving a 2005 Subaru south on Highway 29 near Calistoga. At the same time, a 1997 Infiniti was going north.
CHP said Philip Popick then drifted over the center line and drove into the path of the Infiniti. He slammed into the other car head-on, just south of Larkmead Lane.
1 Killed, 1 Seriously Injured in Highway 29 Collision
The driver of the Infiniti, a 64-year-old Santa Rosa man, died as a result of the collision. His passenger, 62-year-old Santa Rosa resident Deborah Abata, survived with serious injuries.
Meanwhile, Philip Popick also sustained major injuries following the crash. Medical personnel took him to Queen of the Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities soon arrested him at the hospital for suspected felony DUI, causing major injury. Meanwhile, officers forced Highway 29 to shut down in both directions for two hours due to the wreck.
The tragic collision is still under investigation.
