1 Killed, 2 Injured in Pinole Wrong-Way Crash on Eastbound Interstate 80
PINOLE, CA (January 8, 2021) – A wrong-way crash killed one person and injured two others along the Interstate 80 in Pinole.
The collision started when a silver Toyota Camry was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the Interstate Highway 80. Witnesses initially saw the car driving the wrong-way near the Carquinez Bridge.
At the same time, a silver Ford Focus was going east. The California Highway Patrol said the Toyota then slammed head-on into the Ford, west of the Pinole Valley Road exit.

Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and found the driver of the Focus trapped inside as a result of the collision. They then extricated him from the wreckage.
CHP affirmed that the rescued victim, a 46-year-old Vallejo man, died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. His passenger, a 39-year-old Vallejo woman, survived with minor injuries.
Medical personnel also transported the 78-year-old Concord woman driving the wrong-way with moderate injuries. Officials mentioned that she was reported missing prior to the collision.
The names of the deceased and wounded parties remain unreleased. The fatal crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information can call the Walnut Creek office at 925-646-4980.
