Infant Attacked, Critically Injured by Pit Bull Dog
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (May 11, 2018) — A two-month-old infant identified as Jemma-Linda Gonzalez was attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull dog and critically injured Monday as she slept next to her mother in the backyard of her home on Irving Avenue, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
The incident took place about 2:30 p.m. near Sicard Street. The 20-month-old dog named Ookie reportedly clamped its jaws around the baby’s head and shook the child. She had been sleeping in her bouncy chair soaking up the sun as a remedy to cure the jaundice she was born with. The dog put its paw on the chair and was startled when it moved. The owner saved the child by ramming his hand into the animal’s mouth to free the baby.
Later the dog was euthanized at its owner’s request, according to County Animal Services.
The infant was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego where she underwent surgery and is being treated for extensive injuries including a broken nose, fractured skull, eye injuries and puncture wounds on her head. A hospital spokesperson told the newspaper that 453 children were treated last year for dog bites at the hospital and local urgent care facilities in the area.
The family has established a GoFundMe page to help cover costs of her medical care. The child is expected to recover from her injuries, but may face challenges mentally as well as future surgery to repair her displaced jawline.
Dog Bite Attorney
Owners of dogs are expected to take precautionary measures to prevent their animals from hurting other people. When a dog attacks a person and causes injuries, the victim or their family may pursue a personal injury claim against the homeowner or owners of a rental property where the animal lives to recoup their financial losses such as medical bills, pain and suffering and lost wages.
